Microsoft Azure – Application Insights – Customised Query for Performance Counters

Microsoft Azure Application Insights

This is just a beginning, you can do a lot using KQL (Kusto Query Language)

In this blog, I am going to share my first hand experience on Microsoft Azure Application Insights (here after called App Insights) and playing with Kusto Query Language (here after called KQL). There are lot more blogs, articles, videos, websites, etc to teach on this topic. Even I did struggle initially and read a lot with help of Google. It was like just knowledge gained unless we do get hands on and experience it. I believe in “Sharing is Caring” hence I will keep sharing what I learnt and experienced within last few days.

You will find lot of articles on below points so I am going to skip on them. If you have any specific doubt or want to discuss about any of these, feel free to leave comment and I will be happy to share.

  • What is “Application Insights” or “App Insights”?
  • How to monitor application / service health on Microsoft Azure?
  • How to troubleshoot failed requests?
  • What is KQL (Kusto Query Language)?
  • etc…

As I insist on more of Practicals, we will touch base on below listed points and will be sharing few Tips & Tricks from my experience:

  • How to navigate to Query Builder in App Insights?
  • What are important performance tables?
  • How to query specific tables?
  • How to filter and customise results?
  • What else can be done?

So lets get started…

How to navigate to Query Builder in App Insights?

Microsoft Azure App Insights screen displays all possible options so you can just click and find quick answers to the problem / issue noticed or reported. And this is very helpful post the issue happen.

But how would you proactively know about the issue in advance and do something so issue can be prevented!? That’s right – in Microsoft Azure App Insights, use KQL we can look at the history of the data to analyse and identify the pattern so we can setup an alert to proactively know about the issue before occur.

To navigate to “Query Builder”…

  • Open an App Insights
  • Click on “View Logs” drop-down
  • Click on any of the popup menu item

It is possible to have separate or dedicated instance of App Insights and that too in a different region/zone. But App Insights has to be within same Azure Subscription.
